From the PTO Co-Presidents
It has been a great second week of school! We hope that your children are feeling settled in their new routines. We have so many people to thank for making this such a smooth transition. Our wonderful staff and parents have created a warm and inviting environment for our children. Thanks to all the families who have been abiding by the Blue Zone and keeping our kids safe on a daily basis!
For our students’ safety, as well as comfort, all dogs must be on a leash at arrival and dismissal.
We would like to express that driving into the staff parking lot to drop off or pick up your child for/from school is completely off limits and a major safety concern. Thank you in advance for your cooperation with this.
A very BIG THANK YOU to all families for your help and support with our district’s arrival policy this week. We do want to remind everyone that beginning next Monday, September 16, families in all grades (as Kindergarten will now be joining this upcoming week) will drop students outside the school.
The doors are:
- Kindergarten and 1st Grade will enter through the door on the side of the building by the staff parking lot
- 2nd and 3rd Grade will enter through the front door by the main office
- 4th Grade will enter through the modular door
- 5th Grade will enter through the back door by the playground
We are very lucky to have such an active and enthusiastic PTO with so many parents willing to volunteer their time. We encourage you to volunteer this year in a way that fits your schedule. Volunteering is a great way to connect with other parents and understand the invaluable impact the PTO‘s support has on Mason-Rice students. We have several specific volunteer opportunities available – Late Arrivals, Website, PTO Notes, (Printed) Directory and many more. Please email email@example.com if you are interested!
We would also like to take this opportunity to ask you to consider contributing to the Annual Fund (previously known as Dues). The Mason Rice PTO meets a critical need by providing funding for programs, initiatives, and supplies not covered in the Newton Public Schools budget. The Annual Fund is the largest single contributor to our PTO‘s annual budget, typically providing over 40% of the funding. It has to be replenished every year in order to sustain core PTO initiatives.
Today you will receive this letter in your child’s backpack about the Annual Fund, please take a moment to review it.
This morning is our first PTO Board Meeting at 8:35 am – 10:00 am in the After Care Room and look forward to seeing many of you there. Remember as Parents and Guardians we are ALL members of the PTO and we hope you will join us at this meeting or future meetings. We will update the calendar and send the dates in the notes when we have them finalized.
We hope you have a great weekend! And don’t forget to sign up for the Mystery Dinner on October 5th – it’s a great way to meet new parents and connect with old friends!

FOOD SERVICE CHANGES AT MASON-RICE
Over the summer, Newton Public Schools signed an agreement with a new vendor to provide food service for school lunches. The vendor, Whitsons, actually held the contract with NPS several years ago. The school committee also launched a Food Service Advisory Group to receive feedback about school lunch from students and parents, and to then work with Whitsons. Mason Rice parent and PTO member, Matt Whitney, is serving as our representative on this working group. An online community feedback form has been created for input about the food service experience.
