It’s difficult to believe that next week is the final week of our school year.
This Monday, June 11 the weather was absolutely gorgeous to celebrate our annual Fun Run and Family Picnic. It was great to see so many students having fun and participating in the run with students from their grade level. Thank you to Rob Swint and Shawn Konary for organizing the Fun Run, as well as the many parent volunteers who helped this run to be successful. In addition the slushes were a big hit, as well as our annual A+ magazine, which students were rushing to purchase. Thank you to Kim Kinaka and Anand Dighe for leading our A+ Magazine committee, all of our parent and student editors who put this magazine together, and all of our students for your fabulous entries.
On Tuesday, June 12 our school thoroughly enjoyed a Creative Arts and Sciences hip hop program from the group, Ill Style & Peace entitled “Becoming Your Dreams: History of Hip Hop Dance”. The enthusiastic group from Philadelphia taught students the origin of particular hip hop dances like popping and locking in an extremely engaging performance. There was even an opportunity for willing students and staff to come up and perform their dance moves in front of the group.
This week there was also an array of Work Shares in our first, second, and fourth grade classrooms. It was rewarding to visit classrooms and share in the great work that our students have done throughout the course of the year, like a finished writing product or a Google Slides presentation connected to a Civil Rights unit. In addition our fifth graders took their final field trip as elementary students as they ventured into Boston to walk the Freedom Trail.
This Wednesday, June 13 several of our Mason-Rice staff were nominated for a SEPAC Special Education Award. The SEPAC Special Education Awards are presented to Newton staff members who have done exceptional work with students receiving special education services. Parents, guardians, and students submit nominations for any staff member they believe has done exceptional work. Congratulations to all of our 2018 SEPAC Special Educator Award Recipients from Mason-Rice: Jen Bailey, Michelle Coughlin, Kim Shames, Donna Thayer, Stephanie Aasadoorian, Melissa Rice, Allie McManama, and Amanda Baranowsky.
As we approach our final days of school, our teachers have been diligently working to complete end-of-year assessments with your children to help inform them as they prepare report cards to showcase their academic, social, and emotional growth. Families will be provided access to report cards online on Wednesday, June 20.
I look forward to seeing many of you this morning at our Parent Appreciation Breakfast on the playground to be able to thank you for all of your help and support with our incredible school this year.
I would also like to extend a very Happy Father’s Day to all of the fathers in our Mason-Rice community.
I wish you all a wonderful weekend.
