Dear Families,

I hope you all had an enjoyable February break and were able to enjoy some extra time with family and friends. It’s been great to reconnect with everyone this week as we transition to the month of March and this incredible weather.

This Monday, February 26 our students enthusiastically entered the building waiting for the revealing of Mason Rice’s first official mascot at the closing of our Morning Announcements. The votes revealed Rhinos coming in fifth place, Hawks in fourth place, Dragons in third place, Bulldogs in second place, and Mountain Lions as our winner! It was great to see and hear the excitement expressed by our students who actively took part in determining this outcome. Our next step is to work together with Mrs. Horner to thoughtfully create what our mascot will look like. Students have already eagerly begun designing potential ideas.

This Tuesday, February 27 our entire Mason-Rice school engaged in the school’s first Evacuation Drill. The students did an outstanding job following directions and traveling safely to and from our evacuation site, the First Baptist Church. We found the sanctuary to comfortably seat all of us. Our students were even paid a compliment by our Superintendent David Fleishman, who paused for a moment while driving, as we walked together in two rows down Beacon Street to the church. Our school Safety Team will be collectively evaluating this drill and improvements that can be made at our upcoming meeting on Monday, March 5.

This past Friday, February 16, just before our February break began, was our senior custodian Artie Coffey’s last day. As a staff we celebrated his retirement with a breakfast in honor of him on Tuesday, February 13. Artie was a kind, thoughtful, personable, hard working custodian who took great pride in taking care of our building. We all wish him well in his retirement. In the meantime, Steve O’Brien, a floater senior custodian for the district, is currently filling in while I conduct interviews to hire a new senior custodian.

I encourage you to join me for our third Principal Coffee of the school year on Monday, March 12 from 8:30-9:15 AM in the Centre. I look forward to sharing about such initiatives as our recent Evacuation Drill, S.T.A.R.S. Assemblies, Work Shares, and the election of our new school mascot.

I wish you all a wonderful weekend.
