This upcoming week of school (December 4-8) marks the 17th Annual Inclusive Schools Week and is celebrated in classrooms, schools, and communities across the world. This week highlights and embodies the progress schools have made in providing a supportive and quality education to all students. Here at Mason-Rice all students will be designing a paper square with words, pictures, and/or color to show how they will be inclusive. All paper squares across the school will then be put together to make an inclusion quilt. This quilt will be put on display in our Centre. Teachers will also be selecting from a bin of pre-selected, inclusive-themed picture books to read to their classrooms in celebration of this week. In addition, a list of other suggestions for ways teachers can celebrate this extremely important week with their students has been provided. A big THANK YOU to our Inclusion Facilitators, Jen Bailey and Amanda Baranowsky, as well as Behavior Therapist Miriam Bromfield, for taking the time to put these resources together for our students and staff.
Our two new water fountains that are able to both filter water and fill water bottles have now been in use for a couple of weeks and have been a tremendous hit. Thank you again to Newton Community Education, Mason-Rice Afterschool Program, and our current 5th grade class for this amazing gift that benefits all of us here at Mason-Rice.
These past few weeks we have taken time to practice Lockdown and Shelter-in-Place drills. These drills are practiced at all schools throughout our district at least once per year. Our staff has worked diligently to communicate to our students, in a way that is developmentally appropriate, the reasoning and importance behind practicing these drills. The students have done an outstanding job practicing these two drills. If you would like more information with regards to these two drills specifically, or safety and security within our district, you can click on the following link for families on our Newton Public Schools website: https://www.newton.k12.ma.us/Page/1164.
Lastly, I look forward to seeing many of you at our Principal Coffee this Tuesday, December 5, 2017 from 8:30-9:30 a.m. where I will be discussing MCAS, our results as a school, updates from our Literacy Specialist and Math Coach, Principal Stars, and our school mascot.
I wish you all a wonderful weekend.
