Thank you to all of you who joined us on May 8th for our wonderful panel on “Being Muslim in America Today,” Happy May and hope you’re enjoying supporting your Muslim friends during this special month of fasting and prayer!
Additional resources recently gained featured below and are now on our website:
Excellent book lists from the Islamic Center of Boston Wayland, created by Saadia Husain Baloch. I have added a link to them on our website as well: https://sites.google.com/icbwayland.org/outreach
Some great points from our panelists:
How can schools be more Muslim friendly?
1) Observing Muslim holidays. Cambridge does observe Eid-el-Fitr. If that happened in Newton, that would be a symbol of being pluralistic and inclusive.
2) Seeing yourself reflected in forums, conversations, awareness that people are fasting during Ramadan. Good book: Leila’s Lunch Box.
3) Create safe places for students to pray in schools. It feels risky to be praying under stairwells. (See O’Bryant school letter for good ideas on our website, FORJ page)
4) Help identify safe adults for kids and families to talk with and get support from at each school.
